Things to Consider in Selecting Dog Crates

When you have a dog whether big or small, having a dog crate is very essential.  Even if you are at home, you will need a dog crate to keep your dog from getting in the way of your accomplishing your chores.  It also comes in handy at times when you have to leave him home alone for a few hours.

Dog crates provide a safe place for your pets especially when you have to be in public places with many people and pets.  With many other animals in the veterinarian’s office, it is always important to have them contained in crates to prevent them from causing a raucous incident.

Traveling for a long period with your dog would be more convenient if he is provided with a crate.  Airports are very strict when it comes to bringing pets with you on a plane.  They demand full containment and so you must have a crate that is very sturdy while providing your pet with comfort.  It should have a latch door with lock.

Finding a dog crate for him is not hard; there are various kinds available in all pet stores.  There are small and big dog crates in colors that vary and which are made with different kinds of materials.  Many are well built but there are some that only looks good when new, after a while of using it, you will discover that they are made of low quality materials.

Crates made of chrome, those that have plastic bases, and those with epoxy coating, are not good to have.  They usually chip with a few use and can be harmful to your pets.  You see dogs chew on things and when they chew on plastic or chrome, there is a chance that they swallow the material and cause digestive or other health problems.

It is best to purchase a dog crate made with galvanized metal because these are very durable and rust free.  The heavy gauge mesh frame provides a comfortable and safe enclosure for your dog.  It also comes with a metal tray that your pet cannot chew on making it a safe place to put your pet in.

Choosing the best dog crate doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive.  It all depends on your ability to look for a fair priced dog crate with good quality.  The most important thing to remember here is the comfort and safety of your dog.

How to Get the Right Hutch for Guinea Pigs

For an animal to be happy he must be provided with all his basic needs and one of these is to have a roof upon his head. Guinea pigs need a place where they can play and stay in comfort. They are usually kept in cages or guinea pig hutches and it is where they spend most if not all of their time.

For the owner, the hutch is only a place to keep the guinea pigs so that they don’t run away and get lost and to keep them safe from harm. For the guinea pigs however, it is much more. It is their home, a place where they spend all of their time. They eat there, play there, sleep and even go potty there.

It is therefore essential that you choose the hutch carefully. Size is the first thing that you should bear in mind, it must be spacious and provide room for your guinea pigs to play and run around in. There should also be room for them to eat and sleep. It does not necessarily have to be super huge but big enough to accommodate 2 to 3 guinea pigs. The important thing is for your pets to be comfortable in their guinea pig hutches and cages.

Select a hutch that don’t have wire floor as this can be hazardous to your pets. An ideal hutch is one that has a plastic floor that can be detached for easy cleaning and disposal of wastes. It should be well built and strong to withstand the constant activity that guinea pigs are prone to do. They are very active animals and move and run around a lot.

You also have to make sure that the door of the hutch is wide and big enough to enable your hand to move things around easily. This is necessary so that you will not have a hard time when feeding them or giving them water to drink.

The ideal size of the hutch is seven and a half square feet for a single guinea pig but since it is recommended to get at least two guinea pigs, you should buy a hutch which is ten and a half square feet. Providing them with a spacious hutch would help them exercise and making them healthy, happy and contented.

With the hutch, you will need some bedding and the best for this is Timothy hay but you can always buy other kinds depending on your preference and budget. Guinea pigs love to eat and play with hay so give them enough to make them happy. Toys must also be provided to your pets inside the hutch so that they won’t get bored. Stones, bricks, nooks, and pipes are good playthings for your pets.

Selecting the Perfect Pet Bird

Birds are beautiful creatures; they are a joy to watch especially birds that have pretty colorful feathers.  Keeping them as pets would entail a lot of preparations for the owner.  Everything must be ready before you take the bird home.  The bird cage should already be waiting for its occupant, complete with feeding bowls and water containers, perches and toys.  But first you need to decide which kind of bird is right for you.  There are large and small birds, birds that can be taught, and birds that are highly intelligent.  You need to choose one that you can easily maintain and handle.  Here are a few things that you can do to help you in selecting the right pet bird.

a) Remember that birds have wings because they are meant to fly.  Even if they are kept in a cage, they need to able to feel the freedom of flying in a large area.  It will be better if their cage is spacious and have room enough for them to fly around.

Letting birds out of the cage and encouraging them to fly is a good form of exercise for pet birds.

b) Buy a flight cage for him because your pet bird will need ample space to move around, fly and play.  You should have a spacious room where you can place the bird cage.  The cage should be able to hold your pet’s food and water bowls and his toys and perch.  If you cannot get a big cage from the pet store, you can make one yourself.

c) To avoid having your bird become lonely especially during the times when you have to leave him alone, provide him with a companion.  It is always better to buy a pair of birds instead of buying only one.

d) Screen off your windows so that the birds cannot fly out of the room during the time that you let them fly around.

e) Having a pet is a great responsibility, it’s a living being that you must take care of and keep from harm.  Not only do you have to fed, bathe, and provide water for them to drink but you also have to clean their cage to keep them from getting sick because of dirty surroundings.

f) A good place to look for birds is the veterinarian’s office or clinic.  Sometimes stray birds are sent to him for treatment or safekeeping.  You can offer to adopt one or two from his charges; this would make it easier for you to see if a certain bird is the right one for you.

Owning such a pet at home is sometimes a hard thing to do. When you selected the right pet bird for you, you will have an incomparable joy with the entertainment it can give you and your family.

How to Keep Rabbits Safe and Warm In Winter

You might think that rabbits do not need any extra protection against the cold because their fur will do the job but then their fur is not enough to keep them warm during very cold weather.  To keep them from freezing to death, you need to provide them with the necessary precautions like ensuring their rabbit hutches.  Keeping them safe in extreme weather conditions must be your top priority.

The first thing that you need to do is to make sure that the hutch is located in a well protected and sheltered place preferably away from where the wind blows.  It should be made of strong and sturdy materials and should have tin roofing.  If you have a wooden hutch with wire sidings and flooring for your rabbits, you can cover the sides with canvas that can be rolled up during fair weather and rolled down at night and in extreme cold or on a windy day.

The number one thing to avoid is getting the rabbits wet.  In spite of their fur, once their bodies become wet, rabbits will have a hard time to keep their bodies warm.  Their skins must always be kept dry and warm to keep them from getting cold.  All water containers must be secured to the side of the hutch so that the rabbits cannot step on them and spill the contents.  For this reason, wire flooring is necessary.  It allows spilled water to directly fall to the ground.  Hutches are constructed with trays placed under to hold waste matters.  Just empty it regularly to keep the wooden rabbit hutches clean.

Water supply during the cold months can be demanding.  Water freezes easily and if you place the rabbits’ drinking water in containers that have narrow openings, it will freeze sooner.  To keep your rabbits hydrated in cold weather, place their drinking water in containers that are preheated and have wide openings.

Constantly check the water supply to make sure that the rabbits do not get dehydrated. Provide the rabbits with a nesting box where they can sleep during cold nights without freezing their feet.  Line the box with straw for additional insulation.  It should only be enough to accommodate the rabbits.  During windy and cold nights the nesting box will protect the rabbits and keep them warm.

Keeping the rabbits warm during the cold months is necessary so that they will survive.  It is up to you to provide them with a safe place to stay during the cold months of winter.
